WHERE THE JOURNEY BEGINS.

Trails of Possibilities

"Trails of Possibilities" is a mosaic-styled, 40-foot mural produced in collaboration with Discover Goodwill and the Cottonwood Center for the Arts. The mural's creation fell under the direction of Contemporary Artist and Project Director, Nancy Stage Robinson in partnership with Cottonwood Center for the Arts Executive Director Sandy Murphy, Cottonwood volunteer artists and Goodwill's Possibilities program participants.

The hand-crafted mural incorporates over three dozen customized panels, forty color schemes and a wide array of textiles and accent pieces depicting a 24-hour, dusk-to-dawn time span interlaced with natural themes - including budding flowers, soaring doves, swimming sea life, meandering streams and trails, and a majestic mountainscape. Trails of Possibilities was created in 10-foot sections at the Cottonwood Center for the Arts over the span of four months and later transferred in segments to its permanent home on the back wall of the Arts Studio inside the Possibilities town square.

Possibilities' participants were engaged in every stage of the mural's creation, giving them a strong sense of ownership and an incredible satisfaction in achieving something bigger than their personal challenges - a picturesque pathway to endless possibilities.

Program Overview

Possibilities. Where the Journey BeginsFirst-of-its-Kind Program in the Nation

Possibilities presents a unique learning model that engages program participants through a series of new interactions and experiences. Using advanced curriculum, this first-of-its-kind program connects with participants on an entirely new level, motivating a deeper desire to reach out and engage. Using a simulated community as the core, Possibilities recreates everyday living experiences while encouraging safe and unlimited learning. In this tactile environment participants not only develop new life-skills, they also build self-esteem and confidence.

Connected to the Colorado Springs Community

What makes Possibilities truly spectacular is that the program directly connects with the local Colorado Springs community. Through partnerships with local businesses, participants will be able to take newly acquired skills and apply them in their everyday life by engaging and interacting with the community around them. While we do not expect everyone who participates in Possibilities to become entirely self-sufficient, everyone will experience new levels of personal independence – making Possibilities a truly amazing and life changing reality.

Needed Resource for Diverse Populations

Possibilities was created as a resource for underserved populations. The program’s initial focus will be to serve participants with intellectual and physical challenges, helping them build skills that enrich their lives and allow for greater independence. As Possibilities continues to expand, it will broaden its reach and serve even more diverse populations such as those who need help overcoming learning or social challenges. Contact us if you or someone you know has a need that Possibilities can fulfill.

Explore

At the heart of Possibilities is the Town Square. This special area serves as a gathering place for participants, staff, volunteers and anyone who comes to visit. As an integral part of our culture, it is the place where everyone congregates first thing in the morning to hear daily announcements and enjoy some warm-up exercises. It’s also a place of reward and recognition, hosting celebrations where earned Possibilities money is distributed for later purchases in the General Store. From morning festivities to celebrations of accomplishment, the Town Square symbolizes the place “Where the Journey Begins.”

Curriculum

Through its highly advanced programming, Possibilities is all about proactive choice. Participants will have hands-on experiences, with an emphasis on doing and taking self-directed initiative. They won’t just hear about a more abundant life, they’ll engage in it. And as they participate, they’ll experience the rewards of their accomplishments through a purchasing system that allows them to spend Possibilities money they earn in the town square’s general store.

The best program for individuals with learning challenges, Possibilities offers customized, innovative services focused on…

  • Creating an engaging, non-threatening environment where individuals can learn at their own pace and developmental levels.
  • Offering specialized training and assistance with low staff-to-client ratios.
  • Providing unique activities and opportunities that will minimize time spent in clinical or other formal settings.
  • Building and enhancing decision-making skills.
  • Exploring and expanding personal interests and strengths.
  • Utilizing evidence-based training and pre- and post-assessment components that provide tangible outcome measures for each individual.

Class Schedule

Possibilities delivers a robust and holistic day through a diverse class schedule that serves the mental, emotional, physical and social needs of each participant. Using an experiential learning model, a day inside Possibilities connects with participants on many levels. From classroom education to hands-on experiential learning, Possibilities achieves a higher level of engagement creating richer and more effective skill development. The momentum created inside Possibilities propels participants forward into more dynamic and independent lives.

Evidence-based Research

Possibilities is the product of intensive research and collaboration with clinical and academic experts in the field of learning challenges – including top consultants from the University of Illinois.

Drawing from evidence-based research findings, Discover Goodwill identified four key areas of skill development that will provide the framework for Possibilities including:

  • Health and Wellness
  • Leisure and Recreation
  • Education and Academics
  • Time Occupation

The focus of Possibilities is proactive choice. Participants will have hands-on experiences, with an emphasis on experiential learning while being encouraged to take initiative in their efforts. They won’t just hear about a more abundant life, they’ll actually engage in it. And as they participate, they’ll experience the rewards of their accomplishments through a purchasing system that allows them to spend Possibilities money they’ve earned in the town square’s general store.

Testimonials

What is everyone saying about Possibilities?

“Kendra just loves the Discover Goodwill Possibilities program since starting in June, 2012. She enjoys the art studio, apartment, gym activities, and all of the awesome support by the friendly and helpful Goodwill staff members. As her mother, I appreciate the beautiful site, not just its newness but the fact that the planned activities are all under one roof and she does not have to get in a van and be transported all over town for activities. The fact that the site is safe and well-supervised is a definite plus for both of us. Thanks to all of the Goodwill staff for making these past two months so enjoyable. It’s simply amazing!!!
Sherry Somers – Parent of Participant

“My Possibilities participant has been in three different day programs, and Possibilities is the first program that provided her with enough structure and learning moments to really flourish. Possibilities provides programming that allows her to process at her own speed, learn in a variety of ways and to be an individual. I have begged for a program like this and I can’t believe the change I’ve seen in her. Her confidence level has increased tremendously, she’s losing weight, she’s more focused, she’s articulating her needs better. I have seen her move from someone who was previously indifferent about day program to a person who feels meaning in her day, she is passionate about the program. The staff is FANTASTIC, I have every confidence that they are closing the loop and I know she’s safe at Possibilities.”
Brenda – Host Home Provider

The Denver-based Daniels Fund got wind of the project, and the board embraced it wholeheartedly. The $1 million grant is one of the largest the organization has awarded. “Bill Daniels would love this program,” Childears said, referring to the late cable magnate with a wide philanthropic streak. “They so admired the approach and creativity (Goodwill) put into this effort”.

“We believe a hands-on experience through the Credit Union in the Possibilities Town Square will assist participants in gaining critical basic financial skills. Ent Federal Credit Union is pleased to support this unique and vital community service.”
