About Journeys

Journeys. Exploring Every New Day
The Journeys program is designed for adult participants with disabilities who require daily supervision. Discover Goodwill offers a unique, safe and nurturing setting that provides sensory stimulation, calming activities and personal involvement. Participants will enjoy ultimate relaxation in our Snoezelen multisensory environment.

Community integration activities are offered throughout the program week. With a strong emphasis on integration, our program strives to help participants connect with their local community in a safe setting. Individual choice is key in selecting activities. Examples of past opportunities have included touring the Olympic Training Center, enjoying coffee at a local restaurant and learning about our community while visiting a local museum.

Journeys’ Snoezelen Room

Snoezelen (SNOOzelen) is a combination of two Dutch words: snufflen (to sniff, seek out or explore) and doezelen (to relax). This multi-sensory experience helps participants with intellectual and developmental disabilities express choice and engage in a wide range of experiences.

Developed in the 1970s by Dutch Therapists Jan Hulsegge and Ad Verheul, the Snoezelen concept incorporates specialized sensory equipment and materials that can be individually customized to blend sights, sounds, textures, aromas and motion to provide stimulation and calm the primary sensory systems.

Benefits of the Snoezelen Environment
  • Physical Health
  • Increased Relaxation
  • Improved Attention and Memory
  • Reduction in “Excitable” Behavior
  • Increased Quality of Life

Journeys is staffed by a full-time Certified Nursing Assistant and an on-call RN, who makes weekly visits to the center. Discover Goodwill’s CPR and First Aid qualified staff also provides daily living activities, blood pressure checks, weight tracking and administration of medications for participants.

Our staff members are trained in First Aid, CPR and Crisis Prevention. In addition, all staff are trained on integration techniques to enhance individual choice and participation. Our staff-to- participant ratio is typically 1:6.

All care providers undergo extensive background checks and screenings prior to their employment with Discover Goodwill. Background checks are conducted on an annual basis for each Journeys employee.
