Pay It Forward
Have you or someone you know experienced the hopeless, sinking feeling of a layoff?
Evelyn knows this emotion all too well. In a matter of months, the single mom found herself unemployed, evicted and searching for a second chance. Fortunately, Evelyn connected with career resources at Discover Goodwill and found a job as an employment case manager.
But her story doesn’t end there. Now, Evelyn is paying it forward.
As an employment case manager, Evelyn has helped her clients overcome similar challenges as she faced. In fact, she helped one young man, Eric, transform his life.
After being assigned as Eric’s case manager, he quietly confided to her: “I don’t have an address; I’m living in a church.”
One month after helping him navigate the same processes and access the same resources that led to her employment, Eric returned to Evelyn’s desk. “I’m just not making it,” he said. “I don’t know what to do.”
Evelyn asked him a pivotal question: “What do you want to do?” Apprehensively but thoughtfully, Eric shared his passion for cooking.
A floodgate of excitement suddenly opened up and he declared, “I could start my own business—I could cook for people!”
With a clear plan in place, Evelyn helped Eric take the remaining steps to achieve his dreams. He told her that no one had ever listened to his ideas before seeking assistance from Discover Goodwill.
A few months later Eric was back. Cleanly shaven and sharply dressed, he proudly displayed a printed menu and a ring of keys.
“I’m doing it!” Eric declared. “A church asked me to cater their events. I have my own place and I’m saving for a car!”
